The Catholic University of America

Class of 2012

Welcome back sophomores! We hope you had a fantastic summer and that you’ve returned renewed and ready to tackle what promises to be a very exciting year for you. To some degree, you already “know the ropes” of CUA and are ready to propel yourself forward. You’ll be thinking about your major, studying abroad, internships, and your co-curricular involvement in ministry, student organizations, student government, and service. You may even be thinking already about where you might want to live next year. In any case, we wish you the best in making some important decisions, and hope that you will remain connected to CUA and discover many connections throughout your journey.

  • Know your class council: They are Matt Cavanaugh (SAGA), Collin Colburn (SAGA), Dan Essig (SAGA), Leslie Martin (SAGA), Sarah Messer (Program Board), Chris Prudente (SFAB), Anne Roth (SAGA), Colin Schmitt (SAGA), and Roxanne Tourkay (SAGA). These are your representatives to SAGA, SFAB, and Program Board. They are here to serve you and to represent your needs and concerns.

  • Get into the holiday spirit on December 4--it's Light the Season, CUA's Christmas Tree lighting.  There will be music, refreshments, and a visit from Santa!  Starts at 5pm on December 4 on the third floor of the Pryz.
  • The CUA Presidential Search Committee wants your input!  Go to the Presidential Search Web site to fill out a survey, and also to see who is responsible for selecting the next president of CUA!

  • Not sure what to do on Friday night?  Check out what The House is offering!
  • You love movies, right?  Ok, so here are some movies you love to check out!

  • Also, get ready for CUA Chopped! Nothing like a little friendly competition in the kitchen to get things going! OCA is working with Dining Services to put together a Food Network-inspired event that will give you a chance to display your culinary talents or cheer on your classmates.
  • Have you done something today to contribute to sustaining the planet? Recycle? Conserve water? You CAN make a difference!

  • Check out Dialogue on Demand—it’s a lecture/workshop series filled with great information and presented by top notch CUA faculty. Here’s a sample of what you’ll see:

    • The Hispanic Presence in Washington, DC: Historical Legacy and Contemporary Issue
    • Global Warming—Global Poverty: The connections
    • Latino Cultures in the United States:  Implications for Students at CUA and at Home
    • Global Warming from a Science Perspective--Is it real?
    • Who is the American Voter in the Age of Obama?
    • Thanksgiving Dinner and Chemistry--Whats the connection?
    • Personality Styles and Why They Matter

  • Do you know your RA and RM? If you don’t, now’s a great time to get to know them!

  • Do you know what your major is or is going to be? Have you met recently with your adviser?

  • Surely you’ve signed up for Alert DC, right? If not, do it now!!

  • Don’t forget, you can actually talk to your professors outside of class!

  • Haven’t had a chance to visit the Museum of American History yet, since it was closed until last December? Get a group of friends together and check it out. You know it’s free, and everyone needs to see Julia Child’s kitchen at least once!

  • Have you looked at your Cardinal (co-curricular) Transcript lately (or ever!)? Take a look—it’s not hard!

  • How will you make your mark on CUA? What will be your legacy?
  • Looking for volunteer/service opportunities? Look no further!
  • Already a leader on campus? Want to be a leader on campus? Not sure? Check out the current leadership opportunities.
